Nguyễn Ngọc Châu, ingénieur1, ancien enseignant2 et ancien cadre supérieur de banque 3, a vécu la guerre d’indépendance du Việt Nam à travers sa famille des côtés paternel et maternel dont des membres résistants ont été sacrifiés. Lui-même, après des études et de l’expérience en France, est revenu travailler au Việt Nam du Sud en pleine guerre Nord Sud jusqu’à la chute de Sài Gòn en 1975. Établi en France depuis, il a continué sa carrière dans la banque jusqu’à sa retraite.
Parce que deux ouvrages en vietnamien sur sa famille ont été publiés au Việt Nam en 20014, son épouse et ses enfants lui ont demandé d’en rédiger un en Français. C'était « Le Temps des Ancêtres - Une famille vietnamienne dans sa traversée du XXè siècle »5 préfacé par Pierre Brocheux qui le considérait comme de l'histoire « d'en bas ». Comme beaucoup, il a cru bien connaître ce qui s’est passé dans le pays lors des deux dernières guerres. En se lançant dans la tâche, il découvre que pour comprendre l’histoire, des réponses à de nombreuses questions sont nécessaires.
Cela l’a amené à rédiger un deuxième ouvrage en Français et en Anglais pour parler des deux guerres des Vietnamiens, contre la préférence des étrangers qui racontent plutôt des guerres des Français et des Américains. Ce livre s’intitule « Việt Nam - L’histoire politique des deux guerres – Guerre d’indépendance (1858-1954) et Guerre idéologique ou Nord Sud (1945-1975) » (Việt Nam - Political history of the two wars - Independance war (1858-1954) and Ideological war (1945-1975))6. Il est préfacé dans la version française par l’historien Pierre Brocheux qui le considère comme de l'histoire « d'en haut » et dans la version anglaise par le professeur Janet Hoskins de l'USC en Californie (USA), et contient la réponse aux nombreuses questions que s’est posé l’auteur. Faisant 460 pages, il s’appuie sur des archives variées et une vaste bibliographie de plus de cent cinquante ouvrages en Français, en Anglais et en Vietnamien d’historiens et autres. Il est devenu, pour l'auteur, une façon de retransmettre aux nouvelles générations ce qu’il a pu trouver dans ses investigations.

Nguyễn Ngọc Châu, kỹ sư (1), cựu giáo sư và giãng viên (2) và cựu nhân viên cao cấp ngân hàng (3), đã sống qua Chiến tranh giành độc lập Việt Nam qua gia đình bên nội và bên ngoại có người hy sinh trong kháng chiến chống Pháp. Bản thân ông, sau khi du học và một chút kinh nghiệm ở Pháp, ông trở về miền Nam Việt Nam làm việc gần gia đình giữa cuộc chiến tranh Bắc-Nam cho đến khi Sài Gòn sụp đổ vào năm 1975. Ông trở lại Pháp và tiếp tục hành nghề ngân hàng cho đến khi nghỉ hưu.
Vì có hai cuốn sách bằng tiếng Việt về gia đình ông được xuất bản ở Việt Nam vào năm 2001(4), vợ và các con ông muốn ông viết một cuốn bằng tiếng Pháp. Đó là cuốn “Le Temps des Ancêtres- Une famille vietnamienne dans sa traversée du XXe siècle” (Thời của tổ tiên - Một gia đình Việt Nam trong chuyền hành trình xuyên thế kỷ XX)(5) với lời mở đầu của sữ gia Pierre Brocheux coi đó là lịch sử “từ mặt đất”. Giống như nhiều người, ông nghĩ rằng ông biết rõ những gì đã xảy ra ở đất nước Việt Nam trong hai cuộc chiến tranh vừa qua. Khi ông bắt tay vào việc viết cuốn sách, ông phát hiện ra rằng muốn hiểu lịch sử, phải tìm ra câu trả lời cho rất nhiều câu hỏi.
Điều này khiến ông viết cuốn sách thứ hai bằng tiếng Pháp và tiếng Anh để nói về hai cuộc chiến tranh của người Việt Nam, chứ không phải như bao nhiều ngoại quốc,viết về “chiến tranh của Pháp” và “chiến tranh của Mỹ”, “Việt Nam – Histoire politique des deux guerres – Guerre d’indépendance (1858-1954) et Guerre idéologique (1945-1975)” (Việt Nam - Lịch sử chính trị hai cuộc chiến tranh - Chiến tranh giành độc lập (1858-1954) và Chiến tranh tư tưởng (1945-1975)) (6) với lời mở đầu trong bản tiếng Pháp của sử gia Pierre Brocheux, người coi nó là lịch sử “từ trên cao” và trong bản tiếng Anh của Giáo sư Janet Hoskins tại đại học USC ở California (Hoa Kỳ), chứa câu trả lời cho nhiều câu hỏi mà tác giả tự hỏi. Với 460 trang, sách này dựa trên nhiều tài liệu lưu trữ khác nhau và một thư mục rộng lớn gồm hơn một trăm năm mươi tác phẩm bằng tiếng Pháp, tiếng Anh và tiếng Việt của các nhà sử học và tác giả đủ loại. Tác giả cho cuốn sách đó là một cách truyền lại cho các thế hệ mới những gì được tìm thấy trong các cuộc nghiên cứu của mình.

Nguyễn Ngọc Châu, engineer [1] having taught in universities [2] and former senior bank executive [3], lived the Vietnam War of Independence through his family on the paternal and maternal sides, whose several members were sacrificed. He himself, after studies and experience in France, returned to work in South Việt Nam in the midst of the North South war until the fall of Sài Gòn in 1975. Established in France since, he continued his career in the bank until his retirement.
Because two books in Vietnamese about his family were published in Vietnam in 2001 [4] his wife and children asked him to write one in French. It was “The Time of the Ancestors - A Vietnamese Family in its journey over the Twentieth Century” [5] prefaced by Pierre Brocheux who considered it as a history “from below”. Like many, he thought he knew well what happened in the country during the last two wars. As he started to write the book, he discovered that to understand history needed to know answers to many questions. Why was there a repression of the Christians which officially justified the intervention of the French in 1858? Who are the Hòa Hảo, the Caodaïstes, the Bình Xuyên? How did communism come about in the country? Was Hồ Chí Minh “more patriotic than communist” as some thought? Did he accept that the country would become a State of the French Union as the French conceived it? Why did the French return to Indochina in 1945? How was Ngô Đình Diệm chosen by Bảo Đại in 1954? Didn't Việt Nam miss the opportunity to evolve differently that year and in 1961 and 1963, in peace and not war? How were the nationalists defeated in 1975? etc.
This led him to write a second book in French and English to present the two wars of the Vietnamese, against the preference of some foreign historians to write on " the war of the French and the one of the Americans".
This second book in French and English is entitled "Việt Nam - The political history of the two wars - War of Independence (1858-1954) and ideological or North-South war (1945-1975)" [6] . It is prefaced in the French version by historian Pierre Brocheux who considers it as a history "from above", and in the English version by professor Janet Hoskins from USC, California ( USA). It contains the answer to the many questions the author asked himself. At 460 pages, it draws on varied archives and an extensive bibliography of over 150 works in French, English and Vietnamese by historians and others. It has become, for the author, a way of relaying to new generations what he could find in his investigations.
